North West The Best

North West the Best

An initiative to tackle litter, grime and crime in the North West launched this week. The North West Liveability Foundation is designed to improve environmental quality in the region which suffers from high levels of litter.

Six early stage partners are joining forces to try and make the North West cleaner, safer and greener along with a network of other partners across each sub region. The Foundation will see practical solutions to tackle litter and fly-tipping as well as creating longer term partnerships to drive down crime and grime.

Six early partner councils are: Vale Royal, Preston, Bolton, Cumbria, Stockport, Oldham. Part funding has come from the North West Improvement and Efficiency Partnership and the corporate sponsor is the Environment Agency.

Jo Whitaker, from Keep Britain Tidy, said: "The North West of England is an amazing place. We have some beautiful scenery, wonderful heritage and iconic

buildings.  “Unfortunately the region does suffer from litter and environmental problems. The Foundation is about getting to grips with the issues that blight communities and making things better. “The scheme was piloted last year and worked well.

This next stage is about building on that success and trying to make real improvements.” In the pilot areas litter levels were greatly reduced and residents reported that the general appearance of their neighbourhoods got better. People wanting more information can email here
