Fly-tipping

Someone looking through a window from behind a curtain watching someone fly-tipping

Fly-tipping looks unsightly and uncontrolled waste disposal can present a hazard to the public . It is estimated that there are approximately 1.28 million incidences of fly-tipping dealt with by the local authorities. Costing almost £74 million each year to clean up.

In May 2003 Keep Britain Tidy ran a high profile poster campaign that used two hard-hitting images showing fly-tippers depositing of their unwanted waste using a strap line ‘Don’t turn a blind eye’.

The campaign was launched from Victoria Tower Gardens in Westminster. As a publicity stunt to attract the media, waste was strategically dumped outside the Houses of Parliament to emphasise the unsightliness of fly-tipping.

The dedicated fly-tipping ‘tip off’ telephone hotline received a total of 806 calls during the campaign duration.  80% of these calls reported actual fly-tipping incidences and 215 calls were felt substantial enough to be pursued further by either a local authority or The Environment Agency.
