Flyposting

The campaign bus with the slogan flyposting - a waste of paste written on the side

Flyposting costs the country thousands of pounds a year to clean up. It not only looks unsightly but it can lead to the serious decline of an area. Flyposting can play a major role in making an area feel ‘run down’ leading to heavy littering, vandalism and more serious forms of crime.

In 2003 Keep Britain Tidy launched a media campaign targeted at the marketing industry and public limited companies to prevent businesses from using flyposting as a way of marketing their products and events to the public.

The media campaign launch had a Sex Pistols tribute band playing on top of a London open top bus with the message ‘Flyposting – a waste of paste!’ plastered down the side and Keep Britain Tidy staff protesting on the ground. The bus and the protesters visited three of the biggest offenders, Sony, EMI and Warner. Letters of protest were hand delivered to the Chief Executive of these companies and a further five companies received a letter of protest at the same time.

Five of the targeted companies agreed to stop flyposting immediately

We have continued our campaign against those companies that did not respond to the letters and following the action taken by some councils, national flyposting started to reduce across the country.
