Dog fouling was one of highest sources of complaints by the public to MPs, local councillors and local authorities. Estimates in 2002 put the UK dog population at 6.5 million, producing up to 1,000 tonnes of faeces every day.
In June 2002, Keep Britain Tidy launched a hard hitting campaign featuring three shocking posters of dog excrement with the slogan ‘NO’ ‘TOUGH’ and ‘BULL’. The campaign message highlighted the dangers of dog fouling to encourage dog owners to be more responsible and promoted an easy solution to the problem of clearing up dog mess.
We launched the campaign in Clapham Common, using Ricky Tomlinson who sat on a toilet to illustrate the point that ‘you wouldn’t do that, so don’t let your dog!’
The campaign lead to a 40% reduction in dog fouling in key locations monitored across England and attitude and awareness questionnaires revealed that 38% of those questioned were likely to change their future behaviour.
