A recent Keep Britain Tidy survey revealed that most important factor influencing the choice of coastal area to visit was its cleanliness. With some seaside towns becoming hot spots for young revellers the night-time scene can exacerbate the litter problem and it was felt that the campaign also needed to reflect the problems of littering at night.
In August 2005 Keep Britain Tidy ran an anti-litter campaign targeting families and 18-24 year olds.
Two striking images made to look like postcards with the simple and memorable strap line ‘Wish you were here’ were used. The campaign message was to reflect the ‘feel good’ mood of holidaymakers by portraying costal areas in a positive light and encouraging visitors to keep the seaside areas litter free.
Attitude and awareness questionnaires with the general public, revealed that 73% of thoses asked were likely to change their behavior after viewing the posters.
