Car Litter

An arm throwing litter out of a moving car

Car litter is a growing problem, according to our research 91% of litter found on England’s streets is down to pedestrians and people throwing rubbish out of vehicles. This is adding to the 700,000 bin bags collected from roadsides each year.  Keep Britain Tidy's research also shows that people throw litter from their cars because they feel that they will not be seen and they won’t be caught.

We campaigned on this issue in 2003 to reduce the amount of litter on our roads and highways. Mainly targeting males aged between 18-35 and encouraging them and their passengers to take their litter home rather than throwing it out of their vehicle window. We ran a four week high profile advertising campaign accompanied with a radio advert to ensure the messages targeted the people at a point when they might consider littering from the car.

The campaign achieved a fantastic 39% improvement in the cleanliness of the surveyed slip roads. To view or order the campaign posters click here.

Keep Britain Tidy is running another car litter campaign to try and tackle the ever growing problem. To find out more click here.
