What We Think
Public Toilets
The number and quality of public toilets have declined over recent years due to the cost of maintenance.
This has affected local environmental quality by increasing street fouling and cleansing costs.
Poor public toilet provision also deters visitors from town and city centre and tourist attractions. It affects some groups disproportionately such as women who are more likely to be accompanied by children and elderly adults and disabled people.
Solutions to the problem include charging for the use of toilets while making a proportion available free of charge, and innovative schemes and partnerships such as community toilets and SatLav.
